CHICAGO – On Monday, Aug.17, thousands of AFSCME members from across the country will gather in Chicago for the start of the union’s 47th International Convention, which will run through Friday, Aug. 21. As the union celebrates its 90th anniversary, delegates will reflect on how they’ve successfully mobilized to improve the lives of workers and retirees and grow union membership, while also continuing to chart a path forward.
They will also honor the legacy of AFSCME President Lee Saunders, who is retiring after a lifetime of service to the labor movement, including 14 years as AFSCME president, and elect new leadership.
“It’s been the honor of a lifetime to serve as AFSCME’s president for the last 14 years,” said Saunders. “AFSCME’s 1.4 million members represent the best of our country. When we gather in Chicago for our convention, we will celebrate the legacy of our union while preparing for the next chapter in our history. For 90 years, AFSCME members have fought for change that lifts up and builds power for working people and retirees. Despite a hostile, anti-worker administration, AFSCME continues to grow stronger every year due to the hard work of our members. Simply put, our members are built for this moment. As our union enters its tenth decade, we celebrate everything we’ve accomplished and renew our commitment to building a union that will stand the test of time.”
Major leaders from both labor and politics will speak during the convention. Delegates at the AFSCME convention will also vote to elect new union leadership, including president and secretary-treasurer.
