WHEREAS:

66% of the population use Public Libraries nationwide and Federal Government support is only one percent (1%) of the National Budget and our "Education President" wants to cut that by 75%; and

WHEREAS:

Draconian cuts have laid off library workers and deprived the public of Literacy Programs and access to libraries for children, teenagers, adults, and senior citizens; and

WHEREAS:

Public Libraries are needed more than ever during this economic recession as evidenced by increased usage.

WHEREAS:

AFSCME members as both providers and users of Public Library service recognize the deadly impact of the loss of this national treasure.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

That AFSCME support and promote funding for Public Libraries nation-wide on the Federal, State and Local levels; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:

That all locals and councils support and promote Public Libraries as essenial to education in their communities.
