33rd International Convention - Honolulu, HI (1998)

Fostering Collaboration in States Among All AFSCME Affiliates

Resolution No. 105
33rd International Convention
August 24-28, 1998
Honolulu, HI

WHEREAS:

AFSCME's structure varies greatly from state to state, with 10 states having four or more principal affiliates, and only twenty-three states having a single affiliate, either a Council or a directly affiliated local; and

WHEREAS:

The need for a structure through which our affiliates can organize activities of mutual interest has been met largely by improvised or ad hoc arrangements, such as the committee of New York affiliate leaders, or the California PEOPLE structure; and

WHEREAS:

The need for coordination is even greater today, considering the intensity of the privatization movement, the paycheck deception offensive, and other legislative/political matters, and also the increasing involvement of affiliates in organizing the unorganized.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

That AFSCME calls on affiliates in multi-affiliate states to establish a standing coordinating committee to discuss and carry out the joint activities that are of interest to the entire AFSCME membership in the state; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:

That International Union field staff shall initiate such committees, and provide whatever additional support the committees may require.
