WHEREAS:
There is an ever growing need to strengthen local unions by increasing participation among members in all the activities of the union; and
WHEREAS:
The changes in management and implementation of the high performance workplace provide opportunities for a more democratic and participative workplace; and
WHEREAS:
The challenges of privatization and redesigning workplaces require the union to develop new areas of expertise.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:
That AFSCME commits itself to expanding educational efforts for leadership including increased skill in advocacy, bargaining, organizing, bidding for work, and work redesign; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:
That the Education Department develop appropriate training materials to help AFSCME leadership and staff become more adept at facing the challenges that unions face today and that the Education Department sponsor new training initiatives such as leadership schools, train-the-trainer programs, and distance learning.
