Provide Labor TV Programming to Bring Information/Education to Workers in America

Resolution No. 89
33rd International Convention
August 24-28, 1998
Honolulu, HI

WHEREAS:

Nothing is more important to the future of working people than being informed. The need to provide information and education is necessary in the struggle of all workers, union and non-union alike. Information will help workers make more informed decisions on what their work environment should be; and

WHEREAS:

Utilizing TV programming, workers can be kept more informed of their rights, the plight of other workers, kept abreast of what's happening within the labor force around the nation and the world, but most importantly, children of workers will finally have an opportunity to learn for themselves the importance of the union and how their lives have been impacted by unions. Through TV programming, we can strengthen unionism in the United States; and

WHEREAS:

Television has proven to be the most powerful tool for learning, and we believe that it is time for unions to use this medium to keep workers educated and informed.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

That we encourage AFSCME affiliates to explore the utilization of television programming in order that our members be kept informed and make the unions in America stronger; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:

That AFSCME International provide technical assistance to these endeavors and urges the AFL-CIO and other national leaders to also support these efforts; and

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED:

That such a program can only serve to strengthen and to bring local and national unions together for the betterment of the working people of America.
