WHEREAS:
A strong local union is the key to a safe workplace regardless of whether state and local government workers are in a state where they have OSHA protection; and
WHEREAS:
Workers acting together to make the workplace safer makes the local union stronger, builds leadership and provides workers with a sense of their own power. With this strength comes a greater ability to put pressure on employers to provide safer working conditions and improve other conditions of employment; and
WHEREAS:
Workplace safety is a good organizing issue because health and safety affects all workers. Workers are concerned about safe working conditions, and health and safety problems can often be resolved; and
WHEREAS:
In addition to AFSCME's health and safety staff, many affiliates represent health professionals, OSHA inspectors, environmental compliance officers, and other members who could provide valuable technical assistance on health and safety issues during organizing and contract campaigns.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:
The AFSCME health and safety program will continue and build on its "change to organize" emphasis by targeting and providing technical assistance, training, and other forms of support where there are new and internal organizing campaigns, and contract struggles; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:
AFSCME affiliates can contribute to this effort by identifying members with skills and experience who can provide assistance on health and safety issues to support organizing efforts at the local level.
