WHEREAS:
The 2008 and 2010 elections present AFSCME with a unique opportunity to elect labor-friendly candidates and, because state and federal legislative districts will be redrawn in 2011, to shape the political landscape at the state and federal levels for the next decade; and
WHEREAS:
Delegates to the AFSCME 37th International Convention approved Resolution 74 that established a goal to raise $30 million in voluntary political dollars for the 2008 national election cycle, $35 million for the 2010 cycle and set PEOPLE fundraising goals for affiliates as recommended by AFSCME’s 21st Century Committee; and
WHEREAS:
Resolution 74 also called for AFSCME to allocate a portion of per capita taxes to make political contributions and expenditures for political programs in any state where it is permissible by law; and
WHEREAS:
The majority of affiliates have not met their PEOPLE goals; and
WHEREAS:
AFSCME has allocated a portion of per capita taxes for state political programs.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:
That AFSCME and its affiliates reaffirm their commitment to the goal recommended by the 21st Century Committee and approved by the 37th International Convention that 25 percent of members be MVP PEOPLE contributors within 5 years; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:
That the allocation of AFSCME’s funding for state political programs will take into consideration affiliates’ progress on their PEOPLE fundraising goals; and
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED:
That affiliates will make it a top priority to raise $30 million in voluntary political dollars for the 2008 election cycle and $35 million in voluntary political dollars for the 2010 cycle.
