AFSCME is committed to inclusion and equality, dignity and justice. The celebration of Pride Month offers a chance to reflect on, and reinforce, those core beliefs our union is founded on. It’s also a time to examine where we’re headed in the fight for LGBTQ rights by remembering where we’ve been.
The Stonewall uprising – the days-long protests sparked by a police raid of the Stonewall Inn, a gay tavern in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village, 50 years ago – reminds us that change is possible through fearlessness, resilience and collective action.
Today, when in more than half the states, you can still get fired from your job or evicted from your home or denied an education and basic services because someone doesn’t like your sexual orientation or gender identity, the call for courage and solidarity is as urgent as ever.
Please take a moment to learn more about a watershed moment in the LGBTQ rights movement by watching, “Stonewall Uprising: The Year That Changed America.” And join us in the months and years ahead as we fight on front lines of the struggle for LGBTQ rights.
