AFSCME’s Saunders: Capitol Hill workers who ‘picked up the pieces of our democracy and put them back together’ are heroes

AFSCME President Lee Saunders issued the following statement applauding Senate passage of Sen. Sherrod Brown’s resolution honoring the Capitol Hill custodial, janitorial and maintenance staff workers — members of AFSCME Council 20 — who risked their lives serving the country on Jan. 6, 2021:

“The front-line workers who, in the aftermath of Jan. 6 insurrection, picked up the pieces of our democracy and put them back together are nothing less than heroes. Because of their essential work, members of Congress were able to return to the Capitol and certify the results of a free and fair election – ensuring that we overcame one of the most significant attacks on our democracy. We thank Sen. Brown for bringing this resolution to the floor recognizing the courage and sacrifice of Capitol Hill custodial, janitorial and maintenance workers, not just on Jan. 6, but every day.”
