AFSCME’s Saunders applauds O’Malley appointment to Social Security Administration
AFSCME President Lee Saunders released this statement on the nomination of Martin O’Malley to be Commissioner of the Social Security Administration:
“It’s never been more important that we have strong permanent leadership at the Social Security Administration. Former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley brings exactly the right qualities and credentials to this position – executive experience, deep policy expertise and an unwavering belief in retirement with dignity.
“The challenges are big, and the stakes are high. As huge numbers of Baby Boomers continue to become Social Security-eligible in the coming years, we need someone who will protect and expand this program, which has been an indispensable piece of the safety net for going on nine decades. Social Security remains under political attack at a moment when it’s needed most, with 66 million people counting on that check – a check that keeps up with the cost of living – for peace of mind every month.
“We need a fighter like Martin O’Malley, who will ensure that seniors, people with disabilities and others get the benefits they have earned after paying into the system. The Senate should move quickly on his confirmation, so that he can get to work as soon as possible.”
