AFSCME retirees put personal touch on get-out-the-vote effort, mailing 200,000 postcards to members
When it comes to getting out the vote, AFSCME retirees have answered the call this election season.
They’ve mailed personal, handwritten messages to nearly 200,000 AFSCME members across the country, encouraging them to get to the polls on or before November 3.
As a result, the pro-worker candidates in crucially competitive races who win their elections next week will have AFSCME retirees, in part, to thank.
“We cannot take any vote for granted. People are waiting to be asked to vote, and I cannot think of a better way for AFSCME Retirees to reach out to their fellow AFSCME members in other states than through participating in this program,” said AFSCME Retiree Council Chair Jeanne Weaver. “Sending nearly 200,000 postcards is just another show of solidarity and power from AFSCME Retirees and our commitment to electing pro-retiree champions who will work to lower costs, strengthen Social Security, and protect Medicaid and Medicare.”
AFSCME members in 23 states received the special AFSCME postcards in the days leading up to the 2026 midterm elections, penned personally by retired public service workers who are investing their time and energy to encourage working families and retirees to cast their ballots.
All told, about 1,500 AFSCME retirees mailed more than 193,000 postcards, a massive increase from the 2024 effort.
The front of the postcards included the hopeful message, “Let’s Work Together to Protect Our Retirement,” and the back had brief, friendly reminders to make a plan to vote.
We thank AFSCME retirees for this impressive and critically important effort. They know the importance of voter turnout in being able to elect pro-workers lawmakers to the House and the Senate who will protect Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid; respect public service workers; fight to make everyday life more affordable; and invest in our communities.
